The vineyard
Canto alla Moraia is located in the rolling hills of the "chianti aretino," along the Arno valley that runs on the slopes of the Pratomagno mountains, furrowed by the Cassia Vetus, a Roman road that in ancient times connected the Etruscan cities from Florence to Rome.
Arriving at our Estate mulberry trees, oaks, rows of cypresses caressed by the wind and lush vineyards will welcome you, transporting you to another dimension.
Mulberry trees are very old and the Canto alla Moraia Estate is named after them.
32 hectares in size, 11 of which are dedicated to vineyards at 300 meters above sea level, in an area that was called the "Filetto" because of its exceptional fertility, so much so that the Podere was always known in the area as the one that obtained the best products of the area, namely wine, oil and wheat.
The pedological and microclimatic conditions of the area are particularly suited to the cultivation of vines. Our vineyards follow one another on soil of fluvial origin where, 2 million years ago, the flow of water formed two layers, one sandy-clayey and one gravelly, favorable for the rooting of vines.
At Canto alla Moraia the summer passes warm and dry, favoring the full ripening of the clusters. The nights, cool and ventilated by breezes from Pratomagno, ensure aromatic complexity for the grapes.
Varieties
The vineyards, renewed since 2002, cover 11 hectares and consist of a mix of native grape varieties such as Principe Sangiovese, Colorino del Valdarno, Foglia Tonda and Malvasia Nera, and Canaiolo. French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec are present.
The rows are facing south-southwest in perfect harmony with the natural lay of the land. The planting layout allows us to have up to 6400 plants per hectare, trained by spurred cordon and guyot. Careful selection, strictly by hand, at harvest leads to a production of no more than 50-60 quintals of grapes per hectare.
The vineyards bear the names of family members: Canto a Giannetto, Canto a Walter, Lola a Silvia, Maria, Sarah, Laura, and Carlo. The Canto a Giannetto vineyard is the oldest, 50 years old, while the more recent vineyards are dedicated to the children.
